Armament

Since the area was first used as a Fort for the protection of the coastline and harbour, there have been many changes to the armament used within the Fort.Armament

 

  • The guns used at the Fort have included:
  • The 20-Pounders (Muzzle Loaders) in 1804
  • The 32-Pounders (Muzzle Loaders) up to 1840's
  • The 68-Pounders (Muzzle Loaders) in 1867
  • The 80-Pounders (Muzzle Loaders) in 1878, originally above ground then in installed in the Casemate area (underground)
  • The 9-inch Muzzle Loaders installed in 1882
  • The 6-inch Armstrong (Breach-Loader) Disappearing Guns in 1892
  • Three 1.5-inch Nordenfelt Guns by 1892 in the Casemate (replacing the 80-Pounders), with one at Torpedo Point on the harbour near the Pilot Station, one installed at Fort Scratchley above the western Barbette

  • One 1.5-inch Nordenfelt gun removed from No.1 casemate and the emplacement converted for use as a magazine in 1911, one 6-inch Mk V disappearing gun removed from service and two 6-inch Mk VII guns installed as the main armament in 1911. These guns are still in place today, and are fired for special events.
  • Two remaining 1.5-inch Nordenfelt removed from service and returned to Sydney in 1918
  • Two remaining 6-inch disappearing guns removed from service after the end of World War 1
