Location of the Fort
- Fort Scratchley built in 1882 is situated on a strategic part of the south-eastern headland at the entrance to Newcastle Harbour. Set high on a hilltop overlooking the ocean and harbour, Fort Scratchley was designed with such a low profile that it is almost oblivious to any threat from the seaward side.
- The Fort is rich in Military History and is an icon of the Newcastle and Hunter Valley Region ( on right see aerial view ).
- By road Fort Scratchley is easily accessed with free parking outside the main gate of the Fort..

If you arrive by train, the Fort is only a short walk ( approximately 1.125 km) eastward from Newcastle Station, or if you prefer you could catch a taxi from the station. The map below indicates the rail line ending at Newcastle Station ( represented by a black rectangle ). The Fort is represented by a red marker only a short walk away.
